THE 2021 CROSSFIT OPEN AT THE COVE
THE 2021 CROSSFIT OPEN
For those of you new to CrossFit, the CrossFit Open is the first stage of competition determining who goes to the CrossFit Games. It includes a series of events, with one or more events released each week over consecutive weeks, designed for EVERYONE in the CrossFit community. While the truly elite will advance to the next phases, it is so amazing to perform the same workouts alongside ALL CrossFitters worldwide. While technically it’s a competition, we look it as just another way to challenge your own individual goals and see how you progress year after year.
The Open events are released on the official CrossFit Games website and athlete performances in each event are judged, validated, and ranked on the CrossFit Games Leaderboard. The top qualifying individual athletes and teams from each recognized competitive continent will qualify to compete at the next stage of the competition.
Each week’s event(s) will be released on Thursday at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. Athletes will have until the following Monday at 5 p.m. PT to complete the event(s) and submit a score. Once the score submission window closes at 5 p.m. PT on Monday, athletes will not be able to adjust or resubmit a score for that week’s event(s). The first workout will be released on March 11th. Here at the Cove, the Open workouts will be the WOD for that Friday, so whether or not you register, you will be doing the workouts anyway. So might as well register and make it official!
For obvious reasons, this year’s Open will look a little different than others:
- 2021 will be a three-week open (reduced from 5 to 3). CrossFit HQ felt a five-week Open could be a burden on athletes and affiliates. It may or may not be a model they hold going forward, but they’ve said they will use it as a learning experience.
- A “Foundations Division” is added this year due to affiliate feedback and the desire to increase the inclusivity of the event. There will be scaling guidances, but if further scaling is needed, you will be able to do that and still “compete”. They are even adding options for at-home athletes who don’t have equipment.
- Workouts will still need to be judged and validated for the Open. But the mechanism to do this has broadened to include video submission, Zoom/FaceTime judging and in-person options. At the Cove, we build a judge into your Friday workout if you are registered so it’s a no-brainer!
Every competing athlete must register online at games.crossfit.com/register/open. For step-by-step instructions on how to register for the Open, please go to https://games-support.crossfit.com/,click the Open section, and reference the “REGISTER” articles. Open registration is US$20 for all athletes (including individual, adaptive, masters, and teenage divisions) worldwide, and please know this is not US charging you, it’s part of CrossFit’s revenue model to hold the Games year after year.
It doesn’t matter if you’re 14, 40, or 64. Just starting out or a muscle-up pro. We love that you can compare your results by division, location, gym, or group… but most of all see your progress year after year!
